Company Spotlight – Auto-Owner’s Insurance

Auto-Owners Insurance

Established in 1916, Auto-Owners Insurance Group is headquartered in Lansing, Michigan. Recognized for exceptional financial strength and stability, it is among the nation’s largest insurers and provides insurance to nearly 3 million policyholders.

Auto-Owners backs up its products by providing its famous “No Problem”® claims service. The company is represented by 48,000 licensed agents in 26 states and offers multiple lines of insurance including life, home, auto and business.

Auto-Owners is rated A++ (Superior) by the AM Best Company, a nationally recognized independent insurance rating authority, and is also a Fortune 500 company. It has received numerous awards from national organizations for customer service and quality, and is certified as a Great Place to Work®.

Auto-Owners has a long and rich history of giving back to the communities where our associates, agents and policyholders live and work. Being a good corporate citizen includes aiding the people in the places where we do business. It involves us contributing not only financially, but also with our time and our talents. Our giving further strengthens the connection between A-O, our local independent agents who represent us, and our policyholders.

Community Involvement

Auto-Owners Insurance focuses our philanthropic initiatives and efforts on the enrichment and support of the communities where our associates, agents and policyholders live and work. We do so while keeping in mind that we are a company that values prudence in all investments of time, money and other resources.

Causes We Support

Through corporate philanthropy, we are proud to partner with organizations such as the American Heart Association, American Red Cross, Habitat for Humanity, Susan G. Komen, the American Cancer Society and March of Dimes.

To maximize our collective impact and deepen our commitment to community, we have adopted several company-wide associate giving initiatives. Our annual Suits & Sneakers event benefits the American Cancer Society, and, for a $5 donation, associates can wear sneakers to work for the day. Thanks to our associates, this event has helped to fund cancer research, support patients and educate our communities on the effects of cancer.

In addition, our associates are encouraged to participate in our annual campaign to support United Way, an organization that works to identify challenges in communities and create measurable change by developing a coalition of charitable organizations and partnering with schools, government agencies and other entities. Associates can elect what community area of need they want their donations to be applied to through a one-time or recurring donation throughout the year.

A-O Gives Back Program

In January 2018, we launched our company giving program called A-O Gives Back. This program was created to expand our giving, and to empower our associates in the 26 states where we write business to support their community. This program provides each region with the opportunity to have a team of associates participate in pre-approved local charity events. In turn, Auto-Owners will corporately sponsor the events, subject to the program guidelines. Through this program, our associates have proudly and generously volunteered their time to many local charitable events. A-O Gives Back is  another way that our company connects with the needs of each region where we do business on a local level.

Annual Report from Auto-Owners

Auto-Owners enjoyed another year of profitable growth in 2019, extending the record streak to eight consecutive years with an underwriting profit. Competition remains intense, but agents selected Auto-Owners as their carrier of choice on nearly $1.2 billion of new business premium. Total premium grew more than $525 million, or 7.2%. We are thankful for the agents and their decision to partner with us to help serve their policyholders.

In-force policy count grew by more than 224,000, bringing the total number of policies in force to more than 5.25 million. Aided by an excellent year in the stock market, policyholder surplus increased to more than $12.4 billion. We have all the capacity we need to support premium and policy growth for years to come. Auto-Owners Life Insurance Company had another excellent year as well.

Auto-Owners continues to be recognized by AM Best for our strong performance and financial strength. Our A++ (Superior) rating was reaffirmed, making it 48 consecutive years we have received their highest available rating.

Atlantic Casualty Insurance Company, the excess and surplus lines carrier we acquired in 2016, had a spectacular year, once again achieving record premium growth to go along with an excellent combined ratio. Concord General Mutual, our affiliate operating in four New England states, also enjoyed excellent results, highlighted by their fourth consecutive year with an underwriting profit and total premiums now exceeding $200 million.

In May, Auto-Owners acquired Capital Insurance Group, expanding our footprint to the West Coast. Capital withstood significant wildfire losses in 2017 and 2018, and remains the dominant regional carrier writing exclusively through independent agents on the West Coast.
